Connors was an interesting guy. Was a WWII Army vet but never left the states. He played both major league baseball (Dodgers and Cubs), and NBA basketball (Celtics) before becoming an actor. He had been sent down to the triple A LA Angels by the Cubs. A casting director who was a baseball fan thought he looked right for a bit part in a movie. The rest is history. The Rifleman is still rerun daily on METV.
