Default Christmas In The Military Remembered?

I spent at least three Christmas' as an active duty soldier in the US Army. Of those three I only remember one with fellow service personnel ... my Christmas in Vietnam.

My first Christmas on active duty was in 1966 and I was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. I wasn't married then and my home was in Michigan, so I might have gotten a leave and went home ... but I don't remember anything about that Christmas.

In 1967 I was in Nam.

In 1968 I was at Fort Ord, California (Monterey by the Sea) and I was married and we had friends in Monterey and we spent Christmas at their house ... and I have pictures from that day.
The thing I remember was walking on the beach in Monterey in shorts and a tank top and thinking,
"WOW! Shorts and a tank top, on the beach, on Christmas Day! A FIRST for me, being from Michigan."

1965, 66, and 67 I spent my Christmases on the rock (Okinawa). The only thing I do remember was our Marine Corps birthday (November 10th). All the rest was simply a blurrrrrr. LOL

I spent only three Christmas days outside the country.
1966 in Nam, Spent almost the entire day of Christmas Eve at the PHU BAI airfield waiting for CH-53s to fly up from DaNang. A small combo from the Division Band was going to be flying about Northern I CORPS playing Christmas carols at the various bases.
1973 and 1983 I spent both holidays on Okinawa.
The other 17 years of my Marine Corps I spent Christmas in the states and maybe 5 or six of them were with family back in OHIO.

76-80, 2 Christmas's at Lejuene 1 in Japan and 1 at Quantico. I was not home for any of them. I recall we had a choice, take leave over Christmas or New Years but not both ( unless you had some really good reason and it had to be approved). So I was young and single and just volunteered for New Years leave.
