Ok just saying - what the fuck is on that dude's head in the middle and how is he going to seal his gas mask over that beard?

Man I am glad I served when I did, that is bullshit!

Mike, I started serving in the late 1960's. At that time, even our Corps realized that certain religious beliefs shouldn't be tampered with.

Married personnel were allowed to wear a wedding ring, even though it was acknowledged that doing so could result in fatal electrical shock (I was an Avionics tech) or amputation of the finger. (Mine damned near was)

The man you are talking about is a religious Sikh. As such, he understands the dangers of his headgear and facial hair. They could cause his death. He and I chose to accept these risks.

I don't understand your issue.

Let me start off by saying that it was peace time service when I served in the infantry with 2/5 and 2/9 in the 70's.

I wore a crucifix around my neck while in uniform but you could not see it. I never recall anyone being allowed to wear a different kind of cover there. I looked up the definition of uniform - not changing in form or character; remaining the same in all cases and at all times. The gentleman with the beard above looks quite different than those around him. We all looked the same except for the occasional shitbird.

On the beard-we had a couple of black guys that got the bumps real bad when they shaved and they were allowed to not shave for brief periods of time in an attempt to let it heal I guess as it was really a medical issue. At least two guys I served with were eventually shown the door out of the Marines over this issue. Not sure if it was because they just really could not shave (affecting the seal of the gas mask to their face?) or just a medical issue. No one ever wore a beard, although when we were in the field shaving was not nearly as frequent.

Bottom line I never saw anything like the man above where we served so it is very strange to me sorry.

Maybe we can get our long time Army vet Graybeard to tell us his thoughts about this.

During my time on station you either performed to the Marine Corps way of thinking or you got kicked out if memory serves me correctly.

We don't need hadji-chaji garb anywhere near the Marine Corps.
