I've been collecting the addresses of the loran related videos at youtube to include them on the station pages at loran-history.
I saw a couple on Port Clarence, but not the comical one. It's down to so much research and not enough time. I didn't even consider the Attu ones done by the bird watchers ... and that was an annual trek for some of them as Attu was home to some species that were rare. |

Jack,
It's at the bottom of the bb code. All you need is the actual code of the youtube video. Not the whole url, just the code. For instance, the code for that comedic tower demolition was u92YYdy6. Makes the command look like "[ YTV ]u92YYdy6[ /YTV ]" remove the spaces in the brackets and the quotes. The beauty of that is the MB of data on a video does not count against the owner of this forum's allowance, if any. Last edited by JoeJester; 10-19-2016 at 05:11 PM. |

Here are two more from the early to mid 80s crew at attu
There is a large map of Attu at the loran-history site's attu page. It's a decent topographical map to get the challenge's prospective. Google earth had the straight line distance of over 13 miles. I'm sure it didn't include the 4000 feet up and down the mount Terrible, and not the others encountered. The daylight hours limited the challenge. Explorers were typically to be back at the unit two hours before sunset. Of course they always had that 625 foot marker with beacons if it started getting dark. hanks for the info Joe - wish that we had the ability to make videos when I was at Port Clarence or Iwo Jima. We did have a VCR on the Westwind - made the old 1 inch tapes and weighed almost 50 pounds (with battery) and we could only make 15-20 minute tapes before the battery wnet bad.

Jack,
I wish we had more opportunities too. I don't know how many port clarance or iwo jima stuff is on youtube, but, it could be alot if someone visited the NARA site to see what they had available for viewing or downloading. |

This video looks like it was taken under the runway bridge. This little stream ran past the transmitter building.
This is one reason people like Alaska ... .... and hunting is the other. |
