Soon the plaster developed cracks. Then the cracks would have to be plaster patched . . .

The sand-bag bunkers were built by Vietnamese locals, and they plastered them as well.
When the plastered bunkers needed "patching" they were the ones to do this work as well.
As you can see from this photo, there were a lot of "patches" on the walls of these bunkers.
The Big Joke was ... "Are these secret messages being sent to the Viet Cong by being painted on the sides of our own bunkers?"

When I arrived in Nam in Aug of '67, I was not issued combat gear or a weapon. I reported to my 'duty station' (MACV HQ) and for the first 6 months it was class A uniforms, polished brass, and spit shined shoes. My 'weapon' was a typewriter.
Then came Tet of '68 and weapons were issued to your office, or unit or department, not just to you as an individual. Thus I carried a variety of weapons.

When the HQ personnel were formed into a "Defense Force" everyone had to again 'qualify' (or at least practice) with the M-16. These next photos were taken from a "day at the range".
