Remember the SR-71

I remember watching the skies to see if I could see the Black Bird fly in the early morning taking off from Kadena Air Base..and watching it coming in from a mission gliding in to the Air base..
Who else watch it flying????

I got to see it as it was leaving one evening. There was a Hollywood cover girls softball team touring on Oki and the Blackbird flew over the field pretty much straight down the left field foul line. It was rather large as it crossed the field but climbing fast and was just two red exhaust glows within a minute or two(max).
Second hand Blackbird story: one of the members of the unit was going to some place North of Kadena AFB and was halted while the Blackbird was taking off. He saw it come out of its hanger and line up on the runway and then taxi off the runway back to the hangers. Immediately a second Blackbird exited its hanger and flew the mission.
This would have been Sept/Oct 73 to early Sept. 74 at the latest while I was with III MAF Headquarters.

I take it only two of us seen it fly before..

I remember at Iwakuni the Japaneses would stand by the runway and when it flew over they would take pictures like they hadn't seen it before..

I have seen one outside of the Lockheed Skunkworks area outside of Lancaster, California.
It was not flying. Just sitting there on display. I'm sure it was a decommissioned one.

There is another one on display in the AIR FORCE MUSEUM outside of Dayton Ohio.

We have one on Display here in Hutchinson , Ks..
To watch it in it's glory flying over head is awesome..
Got to meet one the pilots wife coming back from Okinawa in 79 and she just knew enough to stay out of trouble..

Used to watch them fly over Schwab on approach to land. Really rumbled.

Saw one takeoff at Osan AB. Started taking flying lessons while stationed at Humphries. We were taxiing out in a Cessna 152 and were told to stop and shut down until we were cleared. Saw it taxi out of a hanger onto the runway and blast out of there. By the time we were cleared, my allotment on the 152 was almost over, so we taxied back to the aero club and parked it. No flying for me that day...
