I switched over to the Computer Field as a reenlistment option in '69. At the time, all input was on punched cards. The field deployable computer was the IBM 1401 with 4k bytes of memory(about 4,100 characters). When I retired the bases had a full size commercial computer setup for rear area support and the IBM Series ONE desktop computer had been ruggedized and deployed out to the field, down to the company level. Updates for the base computers came from a central system software design location, i.e. SASSY(a supply system) was sent out from MCLB, Albany, GA, by a predecessor of the internet, a dedicated DOD network.
